Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has been appointed chairman of the newly launched Osun Sports Trust Fund, an initiative by Governor Ademola Adeleke aimed at revitalizing the state’s sporting infrastructure and attracting philanthropic investment.

The announcement, made Monday, positions Davido at the helm of a campaign to mobilize private-sector support for sustainable sports development. Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, who also serves as the state’s sports commissioner, revealed that the singer accepted the role immediately, aligning with the administration’s vision to transform Osogbo Township Stadium into a world-class facility.

“Ongoing renovation of the Osogbo Township Stadium to Olympic standards—a project that will be completed in the shortest possible time,” Adewusi said, adding that plans are underway to establish a Sports Commission to streamline policy and administration.

Davido’s appointment leverages both his global influence and familial connection—Governor Adeleke is his uncle—to spotlight Osun’s ambitions. As a founder of a charity supporting education and health, Davido’s involvement is expected to draw significant donor interest. “His intervention would attract funds that would impact Osun sports positively,” officials noted.

The stadium upgrade, recently launched, is envisioned as a hub for national and international events, with broader goals of youth empowerment, tourism growth, and grassroots athletic programs. Governor Adeleke’s administration says it aims to build a comprehensive sports ecosystem that positions Osun as a competitive force in Nigeria’s athletic landscape.

With youth unemployment at unprecedented levels according to the National Bureau of Statistics, the initiative underscores the potential of celebrity-led development. However, critics caution that star power alone may not guarantee effective execution, raising questions about the balance between visibility and expertise.
